How Early Engineering Decisions Reduce Field Risk in Process Industries

When customers in chemical processing, refining, or oil & gas reach out to Woven Metal Products, they often arrive with a solution already in mind. It’s a reasonable starting point, but what they may not have is an experienced equipment provider’s perspective on how a given design performs across its full-service lifecycle. They may not have accounted for the risks that don’t surface until there is a turnaround, shutdown or unplanned outage. 

That’s where early engagement with our engineering and subject matter experts makes a measurable difference. 

The Cost of a Late Discovery

In demanding process environments for separation, mass transfer, and reactor applications, even a minor oversight in component design or material selection can escalate a complication quickly. That’s why we coach our customers to get our team involved during the planning and scoping phase.  

The earlier a potential issue is identified, the earlier our team can weigh in on whether a fabrication change or upgrade makes sense — and the easier and less expensive any required changes tend to be. Getting drawings early also gives us time to work through clarifications and adjustments, which especially matters when existing information is limited. That principle guides how we approach every project review. 

What Upfront Scope Review Actually Looks Like

When customers engage us during the planning and scoping phase, our engineers review the full application, not just the component drawing. We ask questions about process conditions, flow characteristics, installation constraints, and maintenance history. We look at what has worked on similar services and what has created problems. 

In some cases, that review confirms the original design is the right approach. In others, it surfaces an opportunity to recommend a different material grade, fabrication or assembly method that can improve performance or simplify future maintenance. The goal is never to change an application for the sake of change, it’s to make sure it’s the right one for best performance before fabrication begins.  

This kind of upfront collaboration has contributed to co-developed solutions with customers over the years. In fact, we’ve secured four patents for proprietary designs for products such as outlet support grids, tray deck repair systems, and flow improvements in radial flow reactors. 

Engineering and Quality Capabilities That Support the Recommendation

Our team’s industry experience is backed by in-house analytical capabilities. We offer Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling for process internals, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and full mechanical design services including hydraulic design, load and stress analysis, and proper material selection. These tools allow us to evaluate design alternatives with real data rather than estimation, and to present customers with a clear, defensible basis for any recommendation we make. 

Quality assurance is built into the same process. Our QC department includes AWS Certified Welding Inspectors and ASNT-certified personnel across multiple inspection disciplines. All projects carry 100% material traceability with full Material Test Reports, so there are no questions about what went into a component when it matters most. 

Why Timing Matters

The further a project advances before a design issue is identified, the more constrained the options become. Engaging our subject matter experts early, during front-end engineering or project planning, preserves the flexibility to evaluate alternatives, prototype when necessary, and confirm the final design well ahead of the fabrication schedule.
