Houston-based Royalty Welding Academy student from New Caney awarded $1,000 toward training tuition

HOUSTON, AUGUST 10, 2023 Woven Metal Products (WMP), a premier fabrication facility serving the oil and gas, petrochemical, refining and other industries, has awarded New Caney resident and 2018 New Caney High School graduate José Montes the 2023 Spark for the Future Scholarship, as part of its Woven Together community engagement program.

Each year, WMP awards a $1,000 scholarship to a Houston-area student who is pursuing higher education and instruction in welding and related metal-working specializations. Students can use the award for study at vocational and accreditation programs, as well as two- and four-year undergraduate programs.

“Our team is passionate about helping grow the capabilities of the future skilled workforce like welders,” said Russell Hillenburg, president of WMP. “Our Woven Together program helps companies like ours make connections with students and raise awareness for manufacturing industry careers in our community.”

José is a student at Royalty Welding Academy pursuing his certification in welding. He’s currently studying tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding and plans to study other welding techniques, including metal inert gas (MIG) and stick welding. His goal is to complete training in the next six to eight months.

“This scholarship means a lot; it helps me out tremendously. Welding has always been a dream job of mine,” said José. “I’ve enjoyed it since I took an agricultural shop class in high school, and one day I’d love to be able to open a welding fabrication shop of my own.”

WMP launched Woven Together, its community engagement program, in 2022. As part of the program, WMP has hosted nearly 150 Houston-area students and instructors from high schools and community colleges to meet with WMP team members and learn about future career possibilities in the fabrication industry and donated more than $32,000 in charitable contributions to community partners.

Applications for the 2024 Spark for the Future award will open in January 2024. For more information, visit https://wovenmetal.com/spark-application.
