Welding Program Director and students accepted welding equipment for hands-on training
HOUSTON, OCTOBER 2, 2024 — Woven Metal Products (WMP), a premier custom fabrication facility serving some of the biggest names across multiple industries, granted the Galveston College Welding Program this year’s Spark for the Future Scholarship funds. The 2024 award consisted of $1,000 worth of welding equipment for the training program.
James Love, welding program director at Galveston College, and of his students accepted the award from WMP representatives, Russell Hillenburg, president / CEO and Beno Konaraki, VP of Production.
“We see the growing need for skilled workers, and we’re proud to support Galveston College students pursuing careers in welding and metal fabrication,” said Hillenburg. “We’re glad to back local training programs to help develop the next generation of fabricators.”
Galveston College received a suite of equipment for their welding training program, including grinders and grinding wheels, gloves and face shields. This welding prep clean-up equipment and associated safety gear will be used in the training program, where students learn theory and then put those skills into practice at the school’s shop.
“Support from companies like Woven Metal Products means a great deal to our program and will have a lasting impact on our students,” said James. “I’m thankful for community partners like these that help us give the next generation of skilled workers the training they need and help us keep our program up to date on trends, equipment, changes in code, and so much more.”
Part of WMP’s Woven Together community engagement program, the Spark for the Future Scholarship is an annual award that supports Houston-area students or educational programs focused on higher education and instruction in welding and related metal-working specializations.
Through Woven Together, WMP has also hosted hundreds of students from the Houston area for shop tours, introducing them to a world-class fabrication facility and showing them career possibilities in welding and fabrication.
James Love’s classes have been to the WMP facility several times over the last two years. In that time, over 250 high school and community college students visited WMP, meeting with team members and learning about potential career paths and the fabrication industry overall.
Applications for the 2025 Spark for the Future award will open in January 2025. For more information, visit https://wovenmetal.com/spark-application.
