Parkland’s Burnaby Refinery, a 55,000 BPD refinery that produces a quarter of British Columbia’s transportation fuel (gasoline and diesel), uses mesh pads plantwide, as they’re vital for its operations.
The refiner has been buying those mesh pads from Woven Metal Products (WMP) for years. However, the pads represented only a fraction of the product offering scope we were capable of fabricating for the refinery.
With a major turnaround on the horizon, Parkland turned to the WMP team, who identified several other internals needed to support a successful shutdown and maintenance event. We quickly provided quotes and detailed drawings for the needed internals, as well as conducted regular maintenance of the crude, hydrotreatings and catalytic reforming units.
With help from WMP, Parkland was able to secure and perform the following in record time:
New fixed valve trays, which improved operation of one of the crude columns to separate crude oil into different products, serving the refinery for many decades to come.
Knockout drum mist eliminator upgrades. These were crucial to protect compressors and improve their reliability to remove liquid droplets in gas processing.
Reactor scallops. WMP fabricated and supplied reactor scallops for the catalytic reformer unit, an essential part of producing high-quality gasoline, using specialty input materials. Although the specialty alloy needed was not readily available, our team was able to source the needed material, finish the complete buildouts, and deliver the products.
WMP successfully supported the Parkland Refinery turnaround, which was completed on time and on budget in March 2023.
