Alvin Community College student awarded $1,000 toward welding training tuition

ALVIN, Texas, August 12, 2025 — Woven Metal Products (WMP), a state-of-the-art fabrication facility serving some of the biggest names across multiple industries, awarded local student Eduardo Castillo with this year’s Spark for the Future Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship will go towards Castillo’s continued studies in the Welding Technology Program at Alvin Community College. Russell Hillenburg, president / CEO, presented him with the award at WMP’s fabrication facility.

“With Spark for the Future, we are investing in the next generation of skilled tradespeople, while strengthening the future of our industry and local workforce,” said Hillenburg. “We are happy to support driven students like Eduardo.”

Castillo, in his second year of studies, has been learning the fundamentals of welding, including stick, wire, Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding. Next, he’ll progress to pipe welding.

“When you’re welding, you’re building something from the ground up. You can take pride in your work,” he said. “I really appreciate this scholarship to continue my training; I’m really fortunate.”

WMP awards the annual Spark for the Future Scholarship to a Houston-area student pursuing higher education in welding or related metal-working specializations. Part of the company’s Woven Together community engagement program, the scholarship can be used for vocational and accreditation programs, as well as two- and four-year undergraduate programs.

Through Woven Together, WMP has also hosted hundreds of students from the Houston area for shop tours, introducing them to a world-class fabrication facility and showing them career possibilities in welding and fabrication.
